A Place Called YORKSHIP Army Vessels of New York Shipbuilding Co. |
| Last updated: 27 July 2006 |
This list includes vessels built for the U.S. War Department, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Army. The most interesting ships on this list are the mine planters, which operated with the Coastal Artillery Service. America's coastal defenses included not only large gun batteries, but arrays of mines on the bottom at harbor entrances and in key ship channels. The mines were controlled by observers in towers, allowing friendly ships to pass in safety.
